I’m James, an experienced British Voice Artist with a passion for character work. As a gamer myself, as well as narrating characters and promos for the game industry is the dream job. Nailing a character voice is one of the best parts of VoiceOver work and I’m often found rolling in laughter when it happens. It’s what gets me out of my silk pyjamas and into the studio.
Familiarity with the Gaming World as both an end user and a narrator means i’ve an understanding of voice styles and contexts. I’ve see the industry evolve over time too, with its greater demand for more narrative content.
The industry has evolved to the point now that gamers are discerning about the smallest detail.
There’s a responsibility to deliver professional performances for both AAA and Indie Games. I read the forums and gamers really do care about the minutia. They simply play with the audio off when a voice grates, or a performance feels wrong.
My formal training in Speech & Drama with Trinity College London certainly helps, but the greatest influence comes from the breadth of life experience I’ve had. It’s a strength to be able to call up a memory bank that features everything from the bizarre to the sublime.
I run a professional studio in Hampshire, UK where I offer remote direction services for game producers, but i’m also accomplished with self direction.
There’s also a lot to be said for visiting another studio of your choice too. I find the presence of an engineer and a voice director is truly liberating. It’s the best way to get the complete performance, even with the client dialled in from Japan.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with AAA Game production houses like Koei Tecmo, Plutonium and Plarium Games, along with wonderful Indie Game Developers like Bionic Ape, Tlon Industries, Gloss Interactive and Vicarious. When it comes to voice acting, everyone gets the premium service.
I’ve narrated character voices ranging from inter-dimensional beings to hillbillies, shouted instructions to folk on the sinking Titanic, been an annoying robot, a lazy space pilot and pretty much everything in between.
I understanding the production process and my place within it. There’s a wider creative effort going on and timelines are crucial to project success.
