I narrate clear and engaging Digital Audioguide content for the Heritage, Tourist Attraction and Education sectors, World-wide. My British Male RP voice can be heard from the Americas Cup Boat Tour in Barcelona, to numerous Art Exhibitions in Paris; from the Museum of Aviation in Stuttgart to guided tours for independent schools in England.
With the emergence of Digital Audio Guides as a dominant way to engage audiences in your story, my relaxed, casual but engaging tone goes down well with Museum Guides, City Guides, Multimedia Educational Content, as well as content for historical tours, college and university guides. My aim is to create a truly immersive experience for visitors.
I’ve created multi-media tours, audio tour guides and museum guides that allow visitors to interact with an exhibition. Talking statues and interactive exhibitions are a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate my acting range and are some of the most enjoyable projects I’ve worked on. As you’ll hear from my demos, my voice lends itself to a wise, distinguished older man. Pushing the limits with character work allows all kinds of absurdity and I like to offer multiple versions to consider.
I’m often asked to narrate an informative English version of a script for international visitors. For the work to remain credible, all names, titles and locations must have correct pronunciation, be clear and accurate and I enjoy the challenge of linguistic gymnastics. I’m very well travelled and know ‘close listening’ is a critical skill.
There are online resources that tell me how to pronounce something, to be used with great caution. They’re never presented in the context of a sentence, usually robotic and often too literal in translation. The best solution is to receive a file with a quick phone recording of challenging words, as it really helps. Local context is King and it’s why Americans often struggle with words like ‘Gloucestershire’.
The most important thing in my approach is to listen closely, then break the word down phonetically, before applying method acting skill to read in a natural way. I never make the mistake of not double checking pronunciations before starting, as that wastes everyones time.
Educational content, especially for children can require an enthusiastic approach, whilst remaining informative and relatable. The narration can also be delivered in a more direct, traditional way like with my eLearning narration, with an emphasis on clear diction and formality. The key to getting this right is for you is my ability to collaborate with your team and develop a great working relationship with you, so that I clearly understand the context, your vision and ultimately what you want to achieve.
I’ve narrated City Walks in Madrid, where I explain the history of street names to English speaking visitors, working closely with the production team to check correct pronunciation and style.
Things have moved on considerably since the early days of audio guides, with technology allowing greater accessibility at attractions and exhibitions. I’m minded to alter my approach, depending on the delivery platform. A City Guide, accessed via an App on a smartphone will be heard by a certain demographic and needs to be delivered at a pace to suit the environment. I also don’t want drivers falling asleep when narrating an in-vehicle tour commentary.
I’m proud of the work that I create and conscious that some Apps now allow audioguide users to keep the content after leaving an exhibition.
Whether its a hand held device, an interactive talking statue, a mobile app or a broadcast commentary, my aim is to enhance the visitor experience with a voice tone that’s clear and accurate. There’s a balance to be struck between good vocal performance and keeping a visitor’s attention where it needs to be. Like music in film, an immersive experience requires everything to work seamlessly together, with the voice lifting it from behind.
