Character Voiceover work is possibly the most enjoyable and rewarding of all genres for me personally. Whether its character based commercial advertising; such as a a viking promoting a vacuum cleaner for a radio advert, a serious radio drama, a TV advert, or interactive educational content, the joy is in creating something authentic, believable, expressive and unique.
As a voice actor, I enjoy the opportunity to free the reigns and go full tilt with this and thats why I always offer multiple versions for consideration. It’s often not until you push the boundaries a little, approach absurdity and then dial back a little that the magic truly appears in my experience.
As a British Character Voiceover, I’d be remiss to not have Sir David Attenborough up my sleeve and I also do an effective Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Professor Brian Cox when needed.
Game Characters are where the wheels can really come off and I love it. As a well seasoned man with lots of experience, my voice easily lends itself to the World of War, Intrigue, Warriors, inter-dimensional beings and reflective monologues next to a burning city. Its good for Game Promos too, with a classic ‘voice of god’ style available.
I’ve shouted instructions to passengers on the Titanic, been a troubled soldier with an air of vengeance, a Marine Sergeant under attack reflective and even a sarcastic sports pundit with the worst manners imaginable, all in the name of creating immersive dialogue for games.
Character work spans so much of the Voiceover industry that it’s hard to pin down to one category. I’ve reflected this in my demo reels so you see what I mean. With over 50 audiobooks narrated, I’ve enjoyed everything from childrens’ characters in modern fiction, to the voice of Scrooge in classic Charles Dickens work. I find that when something leaves me chuckling, or even rolling around in fits of laughter, it’s probably a good character narration.
Sometimes an off-screen voice is needed in a training video to allow the visuals to take precedence. It’s Vitaly important that the listener is able to connect with and relate to the speaker here. The same applies to content for medical training scenarios, where I’ve played the role of both clinician and patient for training content.
With Character Voices For Training, it’s not all about straight narration of educational or informative content. There’s a place for character work here too. I’ve often been an interviewee for HR related on-boarding content. This is where the words, ‘believable, natural and authentic’ are very much the brief and I always consider myself to be in the room talking to one individual. It’s effectively method acting.
